If something has defined the Casa del Reyno family for centuries, it has been their open, welcoming, and hospitable nature. In 1169, Alfonso II of Aragon granted the Casa del Reyno the Martón family coat of arms, which still adorns the door of this house. The early Kings of Aragon, in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, would come to hunt in the Tena Valley and stay at Casa del Reyno, which enjoyed the Privilege of the Chains, closed whenever the King spent the night. For this reason, the large family house became known as Casa del Reyno.

In 1700, with the arrival of the Bourbons, the borders with France were pacified, and the crenellated castle in the Aguas Limpias neighborhood was no longer necessary. The family built the new Casa del Reyno that we know today in the Vico neighborhood.

From then until the early 19th century, many distinguished travelers were welcomed for free, staying a few days to rest from their long journeys. Sometimes, these stays were extended due to harsh weather and the difficulty of the old mule paths. This, in turn, laid the foundation for Hotel Balaitus, which the Fanlo family inaugurated in 1934, transforming Casa del Reyno into the valley’s first family-run hotel.

In 1936, the Tena Valley became isolated, and the family’s renowned hospitality once again turned Casa del Reyno into the valley’s hospital, hosting war casualties—just as it had during the plague of 1653. The distinguished doctor Leopoldo Uría also contributed to this spirit of care and kindness.

After the Spanish Civil War, the now Hotel Balaitus became a welcoming refuge of peace, serenity, and warmth. Above all, it became a place of lively conversations and heartfelt, passionate exchanges between owners and guests, often leading to genuine and lasting friendships. It is worth noting that summer stays at Hotel Balaitus could last up to three months.

In recent decades, with the creation of the Formigal ski resort, a new type of guest has joined the relaxed and tranquil visitors who simply enjoyed the magnificent mountains: a more dynamic and adventurous traveler, eager to actively engage with the privileged natural surroundings of Hotel Balaitus.

Ensuring this enjoyment, allowing guests to experience it firsthand, and providing passionate and caring guidance has been the work of three generations of the Fanlo family:

Don Antonio Fanlo Acín, the founder, mayor, and first skier of Aragon; Don Mariano Fanlo Basail, mayor, teacher, director of the Formigal ski school, and chronicler of the village;

and today, Don Mariano Fanlo Sancho, who continues to make Casa del Reyno also a House of Friendship.
